On Monday and Thursday, at 11.30, the doctor walks with patients. A round in the neighborhood of half an hour each time. This is already happening at eight general practices in Rotterdam, reportedly. Medical doctor Matthijs van der Poel, Heemraadssingel, has started it. A conscious walk does him well himself. "Against sedation disease I write out the walking recipe, with repetition," he says cheerfully. I heard this story when I was in Rotterdam for a talk about Walk21, the big world congress of October 7-11 there.
Spreading the word
Not all General Practicioners can practically take such an initiative: they have a lot on their agenda. The next time in Rotterdam I will definitely go and look fot it. I'm curious if walkers also take their steps when the GP can not go. And whether more ambassadors fit in.
